Solar Impulse - Round the World Airplane

The creators of the Solar Impulse airplane aim to create a vehicle that can take off and fly round the world, without fuel or pollution, powered entirely by solar energy. For the team to achieve this they will have to push back the current technological limits in a number of fields.

• Maximum altitude: 8’500m
• Outside temperatures: + 80°C to -60°C
• Maximum weight: 1’500 kg
• Average speed: 70 km/h
• Wingspan: 61 metres
• Power of the engines: Max. 30 kW totally
• Primary material of construction: carbon fibre
• Batteries: Lithium, weight of 400 kg, from 200 Wh/kg battery capacities
• Solar cells: Monocrystalline silicon, 150 micron thickness, about 200 m2 surface, min 20 % photovoltaic efficiencyUltra-thin and integrated in the wings
