Solar Thermal Power Plants

The solar thermal power plant, Abengoa Solar in Gila Bend, Arizona is expected to begin contributing to the USA electrical grid in 2011, and should generate 280 megawatts. That should be enough to provide energy for 70,000 homes.
Solar thermal power stations of this kind use mirrors to focus the sun's rays into tanks of heat-transfer oil, heating it to about 400°C, which is in turn used to boil water for a steam turbine.
This method of using energy from the sun is usually cheaper and more scaleable than using photovoltaic cells.
The plant should be able to continue to generate power even when the sun isn't shining as some heat is transferred to molten salt tanks, where it can be stored to power the turbine for up to six hours without sunlight.
