Strattons Hotel and Restaurant in Swaffham, Norfolk

England's tourism Oscars have introduced a new sustainability award indicating the growing number of green hotels and B&Bs. The winner of the 2008 Sustainability Award in the annual Enjoy England Awards for Excellence was Strattons Hotel and Restaurant in Swaffham, Norfolk.
You won't have to sacrifice your creature comforts to maintain a clear conscience. Strattons Hotel is a ten room country hotel in a Grade II-listed Queen Anne villa, qualifying as a boutique hotel. Bedrooms feature canopied four-poster beds, open fires, stripped wooden floorboards and free-standing baths. The restaurant serves award-winning food serving only local, seasonal and organic food wherever possible.
Green features include:
• Staff organise the contents of all bins checking that everything that can be recycled is recycled. It's estimated that just 2 per cent of the hotel's total waste is sent to landfill.
• Toilet cisterns fitted with "hippos" made from recycled plastic bottles, saving 20 per cent water on every flush
• Refillable pump dispensers in the bathrooms instead of luxury miniatures
• Notes to guests telling them much water and energy they have saved when they do not put their towels in the laundry.

The other joint winner in the Excellence for England awards was a family-run B&B, The Cottage Lodge. The Lodge features excellent insulation and eco friendly cleaning products.
