This three-bedroom eco-home located on Unst, one of the most northerly inhabited islands in Britain, has become a benchmark for new sustainable house building. The house was designed by Michael and Dorothy Rea and cost around £210,000 to build.

The house features:

• Super efficient insulation
• An electric car powered by the wind
• Under-floor heating using warmth drawn from the outside air
• Ventilation system captures and reuses heat
• Water battery stores excess heat
• Large windows capture warmth from the sun
• Wind turbine provides electricity for household appliances
• Excess power stored in fuel cells for up to four days
• Rainwater harvested for toilets and the washing machine
• Greenhouse growing lemon trees, grapevines and green pepper plants
• Greenhouse to feature wind turbine powering special LED lights
• Plants will grow in high-nutrient hydroponic liquids
